Even though the days are getting longer, something about February just drags along, it’s a dull, dowdy month which nonetheless has the first hints of Spring time and renewal embedded here and there. Valentine’s Day, though it has become a grotesque a marketing behemoth, first came associated with love during the Medieval era, when courtly poets wrote about the first lovebirds singing, and co-opted the saint’s feast day for a day of wooing. After Winter, folks are starting to feel a little frisky, so maybe February is kind of a mullet, business in the front, party in the back.
My very gentle Valentine,
Alas, for me you were born too soon,
As I was born too late for you!
May God forgive my jailer
Who has kept me from you this entire year.
I am sick without your love, my dear,
My very gentle Valentine.
