Specials for Weekend 8.25.23

It’s an old cliché that the more we learn, the more we understand how little we know. It’s also a useful goal, and a reason to learn, because so much of what we “know” is really just what we have learned to repeat. I know matter is comprised of atoms, and I know they don’t really look like the Bohr model, and lo, now I can actually see a photo of an atom, but really I am just trusting that the knowledge others have created is accurate. The more I learn, the more I understand that all knowledge is fluid, and what an amazing gift that is. Rather than ending life in a corner, our beliefs crumbling under the weight of new knowledge, we can ride out of life with that same wonder we had as children with regards to the world around us, but with the experience that allows us to reject those forces that would shove us into the corner to begin with: ignorance, and zealotry, and fear.

“It seems part of the human condition that while we cannot predict future events, as soon as those events do happen we find it hard to see them as anything but inevitable.”

–David Graeber and David Wengrow
