Perhaps the most beautiful thing about this world we share is that some day it will be gone. Sure, we will be gone, each of us, one at a time, but so will this planet, and so we are blessed with the opportunity to cherish it, here and now. It’s not too much to say there is a joy in mourning the way people and things pass from the world, it’s the source of joy, because joy is a kind of gratitude. Thanks to everyone who has helped me remember this.
This earth will grow cold,
a star among stars
and one of the smallest,
a gilded mote on blue velvet—
I mean this, our great earth.
This earth will grow cold one day,
not like a block of ice
or a dead cloud even
but like an empty walnut it will roll along
in pitch-black space . . .
You must grieve for this right now
—you have to feel this sorrow now—
for the world must be loved this much
if you’re going to say “I lived”. . .
