Specials for Weekend 11.4.22

The various and sundry mini-revolutions in transportation, broadcasting technology, computer chips and all the rest of the threads pulling our global community into tighter and tighter proximity with one another have made many of our lives more claustrophobic. It’s like Crocodile Dundee said of Manhattan: “Imagine seven million people all wanting to live together. Yeah, New York must be the friendliest place on Earth.” One awful response to the overwhelming presence of everyone else has been the insinuation of a super-homogeneous global culture into every nook and cranny of the planet, leaked from the teats of corporations with the capital to do so. But, we also have an unparalleled chance to make new culture from the scraps of the old, scraps that we can then help save. It’s always been this way with us, of course, those strange folk with their weird clothes and language that moved into the next valley over make us nervous, but damn, what are they cooking over there, it smells delicious.

Don’t be scared.
